Carrying forward the energy from the high octane riff of yesterday’s recommendation, today’s recommendation comes from Paris, France by the band Shaka Ponk, now residing in Berlin Germany.
The band fuses elements of Rock, Funk, Electro, Punk, Hip-Hop and Dance combined with digital animation to create this one of a kind show which has become their trademark of sorts, their lyrics are almost always a mixture of English, French and Spanish. The band leader Frah is a former web designer, he joined forces with the guitarist CC to come up with a project which brings together music, imagery and activism all on the same platform. An animated monkey character named Goz is a fixture of their live gigs, so much so that it serves as their mascot, here’s how Frah described the name of the band and the concept behind Goz
“We have this monkey which is an ecological warrior describing the world of humans, this is the concept of Shaka and we are just musicians playing around this monkey. So on stage, you have this screen with the monkey singing and dancing and talking to the people and we are playing the songs around him, his name is Goz, he’s really the leader, the mastermind of Shaka and here in France he’s very popular now [laughs], he’s everywhere. And we decided to do this concept with this monkey saying to the humans that they should stop what they do and behave differently to change things because it’s near the end now, it’s talking about ecological... I don’t know human behavior I think. This monkey is really a big star now.”
The song I’m recommending French Touch Puta Madre, comes from their fourth album Bad Porn Movie Trax (How’s that for an album title), and for those of you who are not so proficient in Spanish Puta Madre loosely translates to Mother Fu**er.
I love the exotic accent of the song, but I think I like the riff in the song more than anything, I will put up a couple of live performances here, and throw a couple more in the Facebook Feed, don’t forget to check them out, their live performances are really good, here’s the song
