Joe Satriani - Not Of This Earth

Yesterday it was the student, today it’s the master himself Joe Stariani, the best guitarist to walk this earth in my opinion, started off playing in a power pop band Squares in San Francisco back in the late 70’s and early 80’s went as far as he could, but could only conquer the local scene, so he decided to shift gears and tried his hand on an instrumental Rock N Roll record, which at that time nobody was interested in so he decided to produce the record himself on borrowed money and the rest as they say is history.
In addition to being an instrumental rock guitarist, early in his career he worked as a guitar instructor and names like Steve Vai, Rick Hunolt (Exodus, Metallica), Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Kevin Cadogan (Third Eye Blind) to name a few have been his students. He was also recruited by Mick Jagger as the lead guitarist for his first solo tour and was also the lead guitarist for Deep Purple. Off late he has been a part of the hard rock superband Chickenfoot with Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony (Van Halen) and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers).
The instrumental I’m recommending today is the title track from his official first album Not Of This Earth, he came into prominence with his second album Surfing With The Alien and a lot of the people have not heard of his first album, it’s pretty different in comparison as the base lines and drum lines in Not Of This Earth are pretty generic but his skill with the guitar is evident in every single track.
I like the title track most, it has this perfect strumming start which sets the mood and kind of starts taking you in a trance, then the airy bassful drums kick in and then comes in the lead guitars building up slowly and getting more and more complex yet at the same time returning back to the simple riff, I just love it, unfortunately there is no official video and all I could find is this video of superheroes on youtube
